Slope stability with soil nail

Soil nailing support is suitable for loose and broken conditions, different size has different tensile strength and elongation rate. It has obvious effect than common supporting methods in project construction.

Self drilling soil nail system

Large quantity of engineering construction shows that broken rock mainly takes place in surrounding rock of tunnels, with the characters of deformation and abruptness, it’s hard to deal with the problems exist in tunnel support of hard tunnel only by self drilling soil nail, especially in the hard tunnel at jointed fractured zone.
Information on soil and bedrock hydraulic head (i.e., porewater pressures) is required for slope stability analyses of self-drilling anchored systems. The available piezometer and hydraulic head data for each water-bearing zone should be evaluated, but note that these hydraulic heads are likely to change as a result of seasonal changes in precipitation and construction activities that change or interrupt water flow paths.
For stability analyses, an envelope of maximum heads measured at different times of the year should be conservatively assumed. The required restraint force that must be developed by the self drilling soil nails and the wall will depend on the location of the wall relative to the sliding surface and the amount of material to be stabilized.

Soil nail

Soil nailing is been used in geotechnical engineering to stabilise existing slopes or excavations where top-to-bottom construction is advantageous compared to other retaining wall system. It is an in-situ reinforcement method used to reinforce and strengthen ground by installing steel bars called as soil nails .
In general, the economical use of soil nailing requires, the ground has to be stand unsupported in a vertical or steeply – sloped cut of 1 to 2 m in height for one to two days.

In addition, it is highly desirable that an open drill hole can maintain its stability for at least several hours neither the execution of the work would be more challenging.

Geologically the best suited conditions for soil nailing would be characterized as the stiff to hard fine-grained soils which include stiff to hard clays, clayey silts, silty clays, sandy clays, and sandy silts are preferred soils.

Sand, gravels, cobbles, pebbles and boulder, which are dense to very dense soils with some apparent cohesion also work well for soil nailing.

Weathered rocks is also favorable for soil nailing while it would be weathered throughout and there should not be the weak planes.

The soil which has been deposited by glacial event is also favorable for soil nailing.

Soil nail in soil

The swelling pressure induced lateral stress and deformation in soil, the maximum nail load, and the nail head load of a soil nail wall constructed in high plasticity expansive soil are determined using finite element model. Soil samples were collected from the construction site and were subjected to various laboratory testing to measure the soil parameters related to volume change due to change in soil suction and to establish the soil water characteristic curve for the soil. The moisture content profile of the construction site was monitored for two years and a wetting envelope was developed to represent the maximum change in moisture content due to seasonal fluctuation. A finite element model is developed to simulate the soil nail wall in high plasticity expansive soil, which shows that the lateral stress and deformation in soil, the maximum nail load, and the nail head load of a soil nail wall increases significantly due to seasonal fluctuation of the moisture content.

Powerful soil nails

Soil nail supporting structure

Soil nailing structure is a new retaining structure for soil excavation and slope stabilization since the 1970s. It combines soil mass, soil nail body and concrete front-panel. Through installing soil nail with certain length and density in soil mass, soil nail forms compound soil body based on cohesive force and frictional resistance. Under the circumstance of soil deformation, soil nail accepts passive stress and then reinforce the soil mass by the tension effect. This will not only enhance the stiffness of entire soil body, but also remedy the weakness of soil body: shear-resistance and low-extension strength. Then, the supporting structure with active restriction mechanism is formed, which will enhance the entire stability and improve soil body’s plastic deformation and failure property.

5.When mortar grouting into soil nail, pressure gauge should be checked closely. If the indication is too high, special measures should be adopted and ignoring blocking. In addition, nozzle of grouting pipe should not point to people.
6.Workers should operate according to the operation procedure strictly, ignoring the occurrence of security accident.

Best soil nail system

Soil nailing is an economical technique for constructing retaining walls from the top down as well as stabilizing slopes. When applying the soil nailing process relatively small, closely spaced steel tendons are drilled and grouted into the soil. The soil nails significantly increase the apparent cohesion of the soil through their ability to carry tensile loads. A construction facing is also usually required, and is typically shotcrete reinforced by welded wire mesh. A shotcrete facing is typically applied, although more astatically pleasing options such as precast panels, cast-in-place concrete or revegetation are available for permanent structures. Typical applications of soil nailing are in the construction of new slopes in cuttings and remedial works for unstable slopes. Soil nailing can be used in any natural ground.
Soil nailing system is possible in a wide range of materials including: clays sandy soils, weathered rock, tallus slope deposits, heterogeneous and stratified soils. Soil nailing can be seen as unpractical under the following conditions: soft, plastic clays, organics/peat, loose, low density and/or saturated soils and fills (rubble, cinder, ash, etc.). Soil Nailing Drainage Systems are also a key consideration in design. Drainage systems are integrated into the nailed wall, minimizing liquid pressure and preventing erosion of the reinforced ground.

Soil nailing is used primarily for excavation support or slope stabilization. This process involves the installation of closely spaced soil nails drilled near horizontal and the application of a facing material such as reinforced shotcrete or structural mesh. The soil nails themselves tend to be small in diameter, typically 4″ to 6″, and consist of a center reinforcing bar surrounded by grout. Soil nail spacing usually ranges from 4′ to 6′ on center vertically and horizontally with the top row of soil nails generally being placed in the upper two feet of the excavation or slope.
From a design standpoint, soil nailing is a passive system attempting to place enough anchorage into the adjacent soil so it acts as a “reinforced block” to resist overturning. The load demand on each nail tends to be fairly low as they are intended to act as a group. In the case of excavation support, the facing is usually designed to take little load but more so tie the system together. In the case of slope stabilization, the facing may be designed to take more load and the nails may be post tensioned.

required for structures and utilities
